The Steer also run the Kinglake arm of the Murrindindi Shire Council FReeZA program
FReeZA is an innovative youth development program that enables young people to enjoy fully supervised drug, alcohol and smoke-free events. Each year up to 400 FReeZA events are staged, with over 130,000 young people attending from across Victoria.
The FReeZA program is modelled on a youth participation approach. Young people join a local FReeZA Committee and lead the planning, development and delivery of music and cultural events in their community. FReeZA committees also provide important performance opportunities for local musicians and young artists.
FReeZA committees across Victoria organise drug and alcohol-free gigs with live bands, dance parties and cultural events for young people aged 12 to 25, though most people who attend are between the ages of 14 and 18.
All FReeZA events are organised by a committee of young people for young people. You can tell your parent or guardian that all FReeZA events are supervised and the venues are safe.
OPEN MIC NIGHTS
The Open Night is a FReeZA initiative run by The Steer group. They are run monthly during school terms and have been very popular! Music lovers are invited to Ellimatta on a Tuesday night. Young musicians of any ability are welcome to come and use our professional music facilities and instruments or bring your own. Meet other local musicians, practice with your own band, experience performing in front of an audience or be part of the audience and appreciate live music. Great local young talent have been jamming out some groovy tunes and raising the vibe of the centre. Come along and watch, play, sing, boogie and enjoy the atmosphere.
KINGLAKE COUNTRY FAIR
The Steer FReeZA group will be running the stage and bringing some awesome local live music to the Kinglake Country Fair. Be sure to check out not only the entertainment and bands but also the way this group of local young people can put on an event.
